The following is from one your fellow HCC members. It is long so perhaps grab a cup of tea as you sit and read this real-life example of how to see God in all our struggles. To my brothers and sisters at HCC. I am terrified of writing this because it will finally outline how bad things actually are. Right now, it’s like there are so many things that it seems OK, because I can only see one or two things at a time. Then, I move on down the list and forget (or try not to remember) them all. I will start with a brief introduction to paint the picture. I have spent my entire life being a Christian, I know the bible well-enough to

Run, Don’t Walk! On Sunday we heard about the events that unfolded after Jesus rose from the tomb. Specifically, we heard about the women who were some of the first to discover the empty tomb. This is what was said to them by an angel: “And go quickly and tell his followers, ‘Jesus has risen from the dead. He is going into Galilee ahead of you, and you will see him there.’” Then the angel said, “Now I have told you.” Matthew 28:7 (NCV )     Upon hearing this command to go and tell Jesus’s followers that he has risen, the women wasted no time in doing so! The women left the tomb quickly. They were afraid,

Nerd Corner: Chaos and High Emotion

A Day Unlike Any Other Greg spoke about the numerous appearances that Jesus to different people after He rose from the grave. If you read the 4 Gospel accounts of the events on that day, one thing becomes very clear; it was a day of chaos and emotion. The four gospel writers each record events in a unique way, much the way four witnesses to an event might share a different perspective from each other. If we believe that the Word of God is true and contains no contradictions, then these four stories should be able to create a single plausible   narrative of what actually took place. This week Pastor Greg preached about the events and significance surrounding the most incredible moment in earth’s history since the creation of the world: the resurrection of Jesus! We saw the reactions of his closest disciples, the roman soldiers, the religious leaders and many many witnesses that Jesus appeared to after He was raised from the dead. Unlike with the miracles that Jesus performed earlier in His ministry, Jesus did not want people to be quiet about this one and tell no one. He wanted the news of His triumph over the grave and death to be spread far and wide! No one can deny how amazing it is to see some

Deep Dive: The Greatest Story Never Told

People who know me know that one of my favourite Bible stories is one that Greg briefly touched on in his sermon. I’d like to give that story a bit more air in today’s post. The scene is sometime on Resurrection Day. A group of women had already discovered the empty tomb and had an encounter with angels. The women ran to report their findings to the men disciples, some of whom then ran to the tomb to confirm the women’s account. Let’s pick up the story in Luke 24:13-49, NIV. 13 Now that same day two of them <disciples> were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.  14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened.  15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;  16 but they were kept from recognizing him. 17 He asked them, "What are you discussing together as you walk along?" 18 They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them, named Cleopas,

Questions for Personal or Group Reflections/Discussions

If you wish to take Pastor Greg’s Easter sermon further in your own life, use some or all of the following questions to help focus you, your family, or your life group for your reflections and discussions. ( click here to listen to the sermon ) 1.       What is the Gospel of Christ? How does the resurrection of Jesus give us hope both in this life and the one to come? 2.       Who raised Jesus from the dead? Was it God the Father (Acts 2:32, 33 Romans 6:4) Jesus Himself (John 2:18, 19, John 10:18) or The Holy Spirit (Romans 8:11, 1 Peter 3:18)? 3.       Read Romans 6:3-11. When we come to faith in Christ and are baptized “into Him,” what is the significance of this in relation to the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus? In what ways are we transformed through Christ’s resurrection power? 4.       Read 2 Cor. 5:17. Jesus makes all who believe and follow Him a new creation. Through the power of His resurrection, God has granted Jesus all authority. Not only over the

HCC in the Trenches: "How I'm Seeing God in This Crisis"

Claire Walker wants to share this with her HCC family … Right before the COVID-19 outbreak took hold in Canada, God was leading me to spend time in the book of Habakkuk. Looking back I think maybe it was to prepare me for what was to come. About a month ago I was questioning God about suffering that was happening around me. “God, why? Why are you allowing this?” I didn’t understand. Now here we are in the middle of a global pandemic and we may find ourselves asking the same question of this type of suffering. People all over the world getting seriously ill and some dying, people are out of work, and generally living in fear. With all that is going on many of us may find ourselves asking: “God, why? Why are you allowing this?” We don’t understand. We can’t understand. We can’t always understand what God is doing because He is so much bigger than us, but because He is so much bigger than us, we can trust that He knows what He is doing, whether or not we can make sense
